There are two main ways a sling hook or lifting hook can be attached to the sling, you can either use a clevis at the top to attach to the sling or a hook with an eye at the top. Some hooks have a bushing or bearing at the top that swivels. Here we will discuss all three of these styles below
Eye Hooks
On an eye hook, fittings or a chain is welded for a lasting
connection to the sling. With an eye hook, you attain far more flexibility in
terms of ergonomics and movement to locate the hook and attach it to the cargo.
However, an eye hook is a perfect solution.
Clevis Hooks
A clevis fastener is a fastening system comprising of a
clevis and clevis pin. The clevis is a U-shaped component that has holes at the
end of tines to accept the clevis pin. The clevis pin is the same as the bolt
but is only partly threaded or unthreaded with a cross-hole for a split pin. A
clevis hook is a knob, with or without a snap lock, with a clevis and pin or
bolt at the base. It is used to clip the hook to a chain or bracket.
Swivel Hooks
The swivel hooks are available in two further types.
1. Positioning Swivel Hook
This type of swivel hook rotates to grant the rigger to
correctly align the hook during connection to the cargo. This type of swivel
hook is not designed to spin while under load and is only to be used when you
want to place the hook onto the pick point.
2. True Swivel Hook
The true swivel hook has bearings inside. These bearings of
the wholesale swivel hooks allow the
hook to rotate freely under cargo. The top fitting pivots and swivel to allow
the cargo to rotate to avert twisting of the rigging.
